Project Summary
The Voices of the Hills: Creative Storytelling Workshop, implemented by Green Milieu, is a three-day residential creative storytelling programme that brings together Indigenous youth from across Bangladesh to explore, document, and share stories rooted in their identities, cultures, languages, histories, and lived experiences. The initiative was created in response to the limited representation of Indigenous perspectives in mainstream narratives and the growing need to preserve Indigenous knowledge, oral traditions, and cultural heritage through community-led storytelling.
At the heart of Voices of the Hills is the belief that Indigenous stories should be told by Indigenous people. The project creates an inclusive and inspiring learning environment where young storytellers discover the power of their own voices while learning how storytelling can preserve culture, strengthen identity, challenge stereotypes, and inspire positive change within their communities and beyond.
The workshop offers an immersive learning experience that blends traditional storytelling with contemporary creative practices. Participants explore five innovative storytelling methods: Literature-Based Storytelling, where personal experiences and community narratives are transformed into compelling written stories; Illustration-Based Storytelling, which uses art and visual narratives to communicate culture and identity; Visual Documentary Storytelling, enabling participants to document people, places, and traditions through photography and short films; Puppetry Storytelling, which brings Indigenous folklore, history, and social messages to life through creative performance; and AI-Assisted Storytelling, where participants learn to responsibly use emerging technologies to enhance creativity, script development, and digital storytelling while preserving authentic Indigenous perspectives.
A defining feature of the programme is its emphasis on creativity, innovation, and cultural exchange. Participants engage in intensive storytelling workshops, practical exercises, collaborative story development, peer learning sessions, and one-on-one mentoring with experienced writers, artists, filmmakers, cultural practitioners, and storytellers. The residential setting encourages meaningful dialogue, creative experimentation, and community bonding among Indigenous youth from diverse cultures, languages, and regions of Bangladesh. Cultural evenings and storytelling circles further strengthen intergenerational learning while celebrating the richness and diversity of Indigenous traditions.
Beyond developing creative and technical skills, Voices of the Hills nurtures leadership, confidence, communication, and critical thinking. Participants are encouraged to use storytelling as a powerful tool for preserving cultural memory, documenting community realities, promoting Indigenous rights, raising environmental awareness, and advocating for inclusive and representative narratives. By combining traditional knowledge with creative and digital storytelling techniques, the project equips young Indigenous storytellers to share their voices with local, national, and global audiences.
The workshop concludes with a creative storytelling competition where participants present their original works using the storytelling method of their choice. Outstanding storytellers are recognised through awards for creativity, originality, and authentic representation, inspiring participants to continue documenting and sharing the stories of their communities beyond the workshop.
Ultimately, Voices of the Hills seeks to build a nationwide network of Indigenous storytellers who use creativity to preserve culture, strengthen community identity, and inspire positive social and environmental change. By ensuring that Indigenous stories are documented and shared by those who live them, the project contributes to safeguarding cultural heritage, empowering youth leadership, and creating a future where Indigenous voices are heard, valued, and celebrated across Bangladesh and beyond.
